Kodak Files for Bankruptcy

Kodak filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy today. While it doesn't mean they will go under, it's certainly a possibility. There's also a good chance that the film division will be passed on to another company who might do a better job...or on the other hand, they might just stop making film. Who knows.

Here's an interesting article about how Fuji prepared for the digital landscape twenty years ago, while Kodak spent its money paying out its shareholders.

Haunted House "Photo Project"

Hey dudes,

while browsing today, I came across the flickr of a haunted house that at an identical moment in the walkthrough of the house, fires a strobe and takes a picture right as the patrons are most scared. it actually makes for some extremely interesting photographs. the most interesting thing however, is simply how many of these shots there are. they have hundreds from each month of operation. as someone who stages photos, and tries meticulously to get people to look at least kind of scared, im finding this to be some great source material.

Hey y'all

I've been getting really into some work by this guy Jon Rafman. In one of his projects, he makes large scale prints of images he captures in Google Street View. This is pretty crazy, considering the nature of this work as photography. He is essentially doing Bresson's work, searching for the Decisive Moment, but rather than shooting it himself, he's using the (literally) millions of images that Google has produced for Street View. The work talks about the beauty of our world through an interesting lens, the nine eyes of the Google camera. The three images I've posted here came from the blog Rafman uses to document the project, which is here:

Spencer Tunick

Spencer Tunick has been photographing nudes for years. He is most famous for elaborate organized group-shoots, his work is really amazing and I am most drawn to his early stuff shot in b&w.

Hulu recently uploaded the documentary he made about travelling to 48 states about ten years ago; at the very least it is interesting and offers some ideas on how to tackle shooting strangers (especially when they are naked).

Hey guys, Dale here. I've been in contact with JR, the french street artist who won the TED prize. I've been trying to organize a group action in Cleveland. If anyone is interested, hit me up. Basically we would be taking portraits of people from Cleveland, and then putting up giant posters of them around the city. The idea behind the project is explained in the video on JR's website. They're asking $20 donations per person, which is reasonable considering they are printing and shipping a giant poster to each of us from france (if money is tight, you can ask them to do it for free). Anyway, I'd like to do this with as many people as possible, and the project hasn't really solidified yet, so if you're interested in helping, let me know! We will be shooting b&w, obviously this is open to VisPro as well as 4x5 class and anyone in senior studio. My paper “The Art and Visual Politics of the Tichborne Claimant Case in Victorian London” is part of a longer study I am completing about the history of visual evidence, legal testimony, and the formation of public opinion about contested identities in nineteenth-century Britain. Drawing on examples from hundreds of photographs, engravings, and other visual materials that circulated around the time of the high-profile trial, I plan to discuss how the physical movement of photographs and other visual materials through time and space shaped the meaning of the case from the beginning. The case offers revealing clues to mid-nineteenth century attitudes both about photographs as documentary evidence and about the law as a photographic arena in the years before the Bertillon method and other visual forensic techniques were introduced.

Jennifer Tucker received her BA in Human Biology (Neuropsychology of Vision, Perception, and Memory) from Stanford University, her master’s in History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Cambridge, and her Ph.D. in the History of Science, Medicine, and Technology from Johns Hopkins University. She currently is Associate Professor of History at Wesleyan University and a member of the core faculty of the Science in Society Program and the Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program (Chair, 2008-2009). Her research interests include the history of science and technology, Victorian visual culture, photographic truth and evidence, early science film history and spectatorship, gender and science, and the links between art and the popularization of science in the British Empire. She is the author of Nature Exposed: Photography as Eyewitness in Victorian Science (Johns Hopkins University, 2005) and the editor of a recent special theme issue of History and Theory on “Photography and Historical Interpretation” (Dec. 2009). She has published on scientific ballooning, visual history and the archive, photographic evidence in Victorian law, and the relationship between gender and genre in nineteenth-century European scientific illustration. Her research and teaching have been supported by a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship, Carol A. Baker Memorial Prize for Excellence in Interdisciplinary Teaching and Research, Social Science Research Council and American Council of Learned Societies Grant, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Summer Research Stipend, Clark Art Institute Visiting Research Fellowship, Smithsonian Institution Research Fellowship, National Science Foundation Grant, Johns Hopkins University Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, and a British Marshall Scholarship. In 2009-2010, she was in residence as a Hixon-Riggs Visiting Professor of History and Science/Technology Studies at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California. Recent events she has organized include “Eye of History: The Camera as Witness” and “Science a Moving Image”. Her current project, “The Art and Visual Politics of the Tichborne Claimant Affair,” excavates hundreds of photographs, engravings, and other visual materials that circulated around the time of the high-profile trial in order to show how the physical movement of photographs and other visual materials through time and space shaped the meaning of the case from the beginning. Vivian Maier's discovered work

This work is part of an unfolding mystery of Vivian Maier, a young woman who worked as a nanny in Chicago and photographed the city, as well as all around the world, in the 1950s and 60s. She was unknown to the world until John Maloof, a 29-year-old real estate agent, aquired her negatives a few years ago at an ordinary estate auction. Turns out the collection comprised over 100,000 negatives, including hundreds of undeveloped rolls of film. Also turns out that the photographs aren't just any old photos. Seems like Walker Evans, Diane Arbus, Mary Ellen Mark and Cartier-Bresson all rolled into one, and every photo that Maloof releases onto the internet is just as intriguing and insightful as the last. See the blog he's set up for tons more photographs, and read about how he's discovered her work. There's currently an exhibit of 80+ posthumous prints on view at the Chicago Cultural Center. Field trip!

The second half of the 20th century saw a rapid expansion of HVAC systems in museums
over the world. Climate technology offered the possibility of controlling the environment but
proved to be costly and to create its own problems. The desire to control indoor climate - heat,
moisture, light - by introducing technology and international standards came to define the
field of preventive conservation in the later part of the century.

By studying how indoor climate issues have been considered and dealt with, we can better
understand imagined and real relationships between people and objects in museums. It is
acknowledged that climate is just one of many important factors when it comes to preserve
collections for the future. The lecture focuses on the history of Nationalmuseum, the national
museum of art in Stockholm, and how climate issues have been handled in the building over a
period of 150 years.

To create "East of Eden: Vietnam," Nguyen-duy traveled across Vietnam on a moped looking for war survivors - both affected civilians and amputee ex-combatants - and photographed them against the idyllic Southeast Asian landscape.

A professor of American history at Stanford University, Gordon Chang's research focuses on the history of United States-East Asia relations and on Asian American history. He is particularly interested in the historical connections between race and ethnicity in America and foreign relations, and explores these interconnections in his teaching and scholarship. He is a recipient of Guggenheim and ACLS fellowships, and has been a two-time fellow at the Stanford Humanities Center. Chang is the editor or author of a number of essays and books, including Chinese American Voices: From the Gold Rush to the Present (2006), Asian Americans and Politics: An Exploration (2001), Morning Glory, Evening Shadow: Yamato Ichihashi and His Wartime Writing, 1942-1945 (1997), and Friends and Enemies: The United States, China, and the Soviet Union, 1948-1972 (1990). His most recent work, American Asian Art: A History, 1850-1970 (2008) is the first comprehensive study of the lives and artistic production of American Asian artists active in the United States before 1970. Trevor Paglen is an artist, writer, and experimental geographer whose work deliberately blurs lines between social science, contemporary art, journalism, and other disciplines. His visual work has been exhibited at the Tate Modern, the Andy Warhol Museum, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, and has been featured in numerous publications including the New York Times, Aperture, and Art Forum. He is the author of four books: Torture Taxi: On the Trail of the CIA’s Rendition Flights (2006), I Could Tell You but Then You Would Have to be Destroyed by Me (2007), Blank Spots on a Map (2009), and Invisible (forthcoming August 30, 2010). Egypt's state-run newspaper has come under fire for altering a photograph to suggest President Hosni Mubarak was leading the Middle East peace talks.

Al-Ahram showed Mr Mubarak walking on a red carpet ahead of US President Barack Obama as well as the Israeli, Palestinian and Jordanian leaders.

The original image, taken at the White House when talks were formally re-launched, shows Mr Obama leading the way and Mr Mubarak trailing behind.

Andy Grundberg, Culture Wars Revisited: Mapplethorpe, Photography, Pornography and the Real

Andy Grundberg is a curator, teacher, arts consultant and former New York Times critic who has been involved with photography and art for more than twenty-five years. Among the major exhibitions he has organized are Photography and Art: Interactions Since 1946 (1987), Points of Entry: Tracing Cultures (1996), Ansel Adams: A Legacy (1997), and In Response to Place: Photographs from the Nature Conservancy’s Last Great Places (2001). His books include Alexey Brodovitch (1989), Mike and Doug Starn (1990), and The Crisis of the Real (1999), a collection of essays, which examine the notion that photography both reflects and helps shape the contemporary art world. Grundberg is currently the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies and the Chair of Photography at the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, D.C.

Mark Levitch, Filling the Void: The Culture of Photography in Great War France

Mark Levitch holds a Ph.D. in modern and contemporary art history from the University of Pennsylvania. Previously an intelligence analyst at the State Department, Levitch works as a researcher and writer at the Department of Photographs at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC. He is also the author of Pantheon De La Guerre: Reconfiguring a Panorama of the Great War (2006), the first historical and scholarly exploration of the Pantheon. Oberlin’s Professor of History Leonard Smith writes: “Levitch’s fine archaeology of the Pantheon provides a great service to historians of the memory of the Great War.” Levitch combines cultural history, art history and material culture studies to trace the changing reception of traditional art in the new age of mechanical media.

David Odo, Reframed Meanings: Early Photography of Japan as Souvenir/Science

David Odo is the Bradley Assistant Curator of Academic Affairs at the Yale University Art Gallery. He previously taught in the Department of Anthropology at Harvard University. Odo received his D.Phil. in Social and Cultural Anthropology from the University of Oxford, and has held numerous research fellowships, including appointments at the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Freer/Sackler Galleries, Harvard University, and the University of Tokyo. He has edited, curated and published work on early Japanese and Asian photography. His most recent publications are Unknown Japan: Reconsidering Early Photographs, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (2008) and “Expeditionary Photographs of the Ogasawara Islands, 1875-76” (in History of Photography, 2009).

Jake and his mom Rhea collaborated on The Gift, the last project of the Mixed Media class. 10 am on Sunday we were invited to show up wearing pajamas. First of all, no one has pajamas and I don't think that students can get up that early on a Sunday. We all came, some of us wearing pajamas and watched Jake's video and ate Ria's famous pancakes with berries, scrambled eggs with mushroom and cheese, bacon and drank Mimosa. Happy Mother's Day and it was a win win situation for everybody. Thanks Ria and Jake!!!

What happened to Lucas' Site Specific Project

Lucas created a beautiful space under the stone circle in the Arb and before he can document the project, the police cleaned it up and dumped it in the trash by the golf course. So the crew loaded up and went in search of Lucas' project and miraculously Lucas found it after digging around in the dumpster. As a bonus Sophie found a bag of dog droppings sitting on top of Lucas' mirror
